Built before 1900, the
Schoolhouse was a working country school for many
years, becoming a private residence in the late
1970’s and now is available for the public to enjoy.
The distinctive rising sun carved into the painted
peaks facing East invites visitors to a unique place
teaming with a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. |

The house has a working
kitchen, two baths (one with big old claw foot tub
and the other with a Civil War-era shower), a large
master bedroom on the second floor with a
magnificent view to the rising sun, and two bedrooms
with twin beds in the finished basement. You'll find
laundry facilities and linens provided. The kitchen
is complete with a dishwasher, microwave, dishes,
cookware and utensils, and a coffeemaker. |

For in-house entertainment a
vintage piano awaits and board games and a
television are available. A step outside to the deck
provides a beautiful sweeping view into Iowa country
that Grant Wood elevated to a famous art form. In
fact his historic Stone City is a “stone’s throw”
down the road and nearby Anamosa boasts a Grant Wood
Tourism Center and Gallery. |

Books abound in the Country
Schoolhouse. The main floor bookcase overflows with
something for every taste and age.
Located on an
acre of Iowa ground between the Wapsipinicon River
and Buffalo Creek, the schoolhouse is planted on a
hill overlooking a verdant valley. Peaceful, yet
close to fine restaurants, museums and parks, the
schoolhouse is the perfect get-away. |
Come stay in the unique schoolhouse in the
countryside made famous by Grant Wood!
